"No one cares about you. No one cares. You will die and be forgotten." -Frederick Lenz
No one really cares about the scars on your face, or your fizzy hair, not even the un-ironed dress that you are wearing again this week.
This post is more to me than you guys. People are much preoccupied with their own selves to give a damn about you or me.
We believe that people notice, we hear them whispering, and giggling, but they are not talking about us. This is called the spotlight effect, where we think everyone is looking at us, talking about us, and just us. However, the reality remains constant, they are not even noticing us.
To give you an example, remember that last awkward conversation you had with someone, where you almost buried yourself in the earth out of embarrassment? Did you ever think about how the other person might have felt? Let me guess, you didn't.
If we are never thinking about others, then others are also not thinking about us. As simple as that.
Instead of wasting this never-coming-again moment on being awkward just take that first step, believe me, it will be worth it. Regret is better than guilt. Feeling regret about what you did will help you alter your actions for future circumstances, but the guilt of not taking that step will always be with you like your shadow.
And 99.9% of the time, it's not that bad, really. Our brains evolved thinking about the worst-case scenario to help us be prepared for everything in order to fight or take flight, but this very brain wiring is paralyzing us now by imagining all the things that can go bad when in reality it never happens.
Being careful and never taking any action, are two very different things. Be prepared not paralyzed. Stop making mountains out of pebbles and take that first step, then see the magic that will unfold.
