“Why compare yourself with others? No one in the entire world can do a better job of being you than you.”
DISCLAIMER🤓: THIS BLOG IS QUITE A BIT LONGER SO READ TILL THE END TO UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING.😅
Raise your hand🙋♀️ if your parents or at least someone ever asked you: “what do you want to be when you grow up?🤔”. Our elders always remind us to make a career choice ASAP. Schools taught us everything (that has nothing to do with real-life🙄😂) except how to choose a career.
The most common question: how do you find a career you’ll love?🤔
Most people don’t. A lucky few have a crystal clear passion they persistently follow until they turn their dream into a reality and live a happily-ever-after life.
What if you don’t have a clear passion to follow? Are you doomed to a soul-sucking job and a miserable life while waiting for the perfect passion that may never come? Then you have come to the right place.👍
There is an alternative and better way to choose a career and not just wait for an ever-coming passion. You can shop around for your career like you would shop for a new pair of things which you love, for example, a pair of killer shoes👟. Don’t get me wrong. Here’s how:
Step 1: Get excited and start shopping.
Imagine if you could only have one pair of shoes in your whole life. Probabilities are you’ll be obsessed about finding the perfect pair and what happens if you get bored of them, or the shoes got damaged, or you can’t return them to the shop in time? So, much pressure and stress. That’s exactly how we treat our careers. We’re told to pick one job and stick to it for the rest of your life. But what if you don’t like what you pick?😨
The fear is real😖. It keeps you stuck and makes you not want to choose anything.
Fortunately😊, this isn’t how we shop for a pair of shoes. We know we can have as many as we want or more than that or take them back to the store if we decide we don’t like them or we aren’t comfortable to walk in them. Without that pressure, shopping would be fun🥳.
We take time looking for the perfect pair. We feel different kinds of materials with our hands🥿, try different designs👞👟👢👡, look at all various colors the shoes come in, and what fits us and what doesn't. We filter our search to a few we really like👟🥿. Then, we google for reviews (which I do). Ask our friends about their opinion, we focus on how comfortable the shoes feel. If everything is right, then we go ahead and buy the shoes.
We can do the same for our careers. Sounds creepy😒? Lemme explain🤓. Look around for any career you think could be fun and note it down on a piece of paper📝. Think about it carefully. Take this few points into consideration:
1)Your skills: what are you good at and what jobs require those skills? For example, if you’re a good writer, you could be a journalist, content writer, etc… note them all.
2)Your interests: what are you passionate about? Maybe you’re into fashion and know how to put together great outfits. Then note down stylist, fashion designer, fashion editor, and anything else that comes to your mind.
3)What’s important to you in a career? In answering this question, don't think about what your parents believe, what your teachers told you, what your friends and colleagues are doing. Go back to basics and define what’s important to YOU. Essentially, you’re coming up with the criteria for your dream job here. You’ll want to consider things like location, schedule, the type of work, how much money you want to earn, the kind of people you’re working with, the level of autonomy, how much learning you want to have on the job…
4)What do you care about?: You might be passionate about making life easier for families with better products in the home, bringing innovations, building a community of like-minded people; or you might care about promoting music and art, or cultivating beauty and fashion. The point is that this is a very personal choice, and you should make it without any sense of guilt, or comparing it to what other people are doing.
PRO TIP: Don’t miss anything at this stage. That voice in your head that tells you “you don’t have enough experience/talent/skills/knowledge /whatever for a certain job? IGNORE IT.
Right now, you’re just noting down ideas📝. You’ll filter it in the next step-based o what your soul craves to do, not what your inner mean soul tells you, you can’t do😒.
Step 2:Try a job (career)👩✈️
Now you have a list of job titles 👩✈️👩🌾👩🎓👩🎤🏋️♀️🏊♀️🏄♀️👩💻👷♀️ that, when you look at them, you get excited the most and are often the ones you think you’re not qualified enough to do. This is a sign you’re getting closer to your life purpose. That excitement is the voice of your soul guiding you in the right direction.
Feared? That’s the inner mean soul. It knows that the only way you can fulfill your purpose is to think big and get out of your comfort zone and –It scares the hell out of it (soul).
Reassure it. For now, you’re only gonna try these exciting jobs on for size in the comfort of your own home.
Pick one of the jobs that excite you the most and do a quick/brief google search”
1)What task will you be doing every single day?🤔
2)what kind of companies/clients would you work for?🤔
3)what kind of experience is required?🤔
4)how many hours do you have to work every week?🤔
5)how much is the pay?🤔
6)what are opportunities for growth?🤔
As you go through this list, ask yourself, “could I see myself doing this🤔?”
If the prospects excite you😁, you’ve found the winner🥳. It’s definitely a career you should explore in practice.
Do you feel meh ☹️(uninspiring) after imagining yourself in this career? Let it go [frozen😅🤣]. If you don’t enjoy dreaming about it, what chances are there you’ll enjoy doing it?🤔
Repeat the same for every job(career) on your list until you find the one that excites you the most. Then, move on step 3.
Step3: Get comfortable in your new career.
At this point, you’ve identified one job you’d love to do👩🎨. Time to put it to the test.
Think of a way you can get comfortable and explore the job without making a bit of commitment. Maybe you can take on a short internship for a company in your field to see if you’d like to work in that environment. Maybe you can enroll in a course to learn a new skill that’s required for your new job. You could discover that you like it more than you thought😍-or that it’s complete hell for you🥴🤮.
If you wake up every day excited for what lies ahead and you can feel deep inside this is what you’re meant to do with your life😁, congratulations! 🥳You’ve found your life purpose😃.
If you still feel miserable and think this isn’t it, go back to the list of jobs and try another job👍. Be happy you’ve discovered this career isn’t right for you now, instead of wasting years and money on the wrong path🤷♀️. This isn’t wasted time. You can bring any insights and skills you’ve learned with you in your new job😊. Spending years in the wrong career, never exploring any other possibility- that’s time you’ll never get back😔.
And remember:
You don’t have to have it all figured out right now.🙂🙃
Don’t pressure yourself. If your friends have already started their career paths and you’re still there, trying to figure things out, it’s okay👍. Don’t be too hard on yourself. However, do realize that if you really want to figure out what you want to do, you should exert the necessary effort😇.
In the end, I can just say Keep Exploring, you might be able to connect the dots one day! Don't end up as a packaged product like most of your classmates!😎
Last but not least, understand your personality. Don’t copy someone else. Don’t give an F about what other people think. The truth however is people will criticize you no matter what🤷♀️.
If you take up an IT job, people will say he is so desperate for money that he works as a slave. If you choose to be a writer, people will say that you became a writer just because you were not getting any other job.
The worst thing you can do in your life is to let strangers influence your career path☹️. There will always be a group of people who will criticize you even if you become a saint.
There's a difference between doing what you love❤️ and loving what you do😻. I'd rather be a joyful failure than a miserable success.🙃
Over to you, now. Have you ever tried a job and how did it go? Share your experience in the comments👍. If you liked it and think it’s helpful, share it with friends. See you all again with some other information😜. Until then keep shining🌟. The world is ours to rule🌍.
