Hey there, Smartsouls! How have you been? I'm great as always. Sometimes doing nothing is better than just doing something hence in today's post I will share why that is the case, and also why I encourage you to make friendship with Boredom. Let's dive in:
Boredom is defined as the state of feeling bored, (bruh!) Being bored is the feeling of weary and impatient because you are not occupied in any activity. That's the basic definition. However, in this digital era we shouldn't be bored as we got tons of devices that keeps us occupied, but guess what? We are bored.
Short form videos are one of the widely used devices to avoid being bored, but you might be surprised to know that it is killing us, slowly but surely. Short form videos, or social media altogether ignites depressing thoughts by fueling jeaolsy and envy in us. It kills our creativity, ability to focus, and more.
We have written tons of essays about the cons of excessive use of mobile phone in our school days. But we still use it. We do need phone as it makes life easier. However, in midst of this we forgot the fact that phone was just that, a tool to make life easier, not a life in and of itself.
I can bet all my dimes that anyone reading this had spend at leat 1-2 hours on social media just scrolling mindlessly. Though, we have the best excuse of all time and that is, we are acquiring knowledge, news, and improving ourselves. I, myself, am guilty of this. I spend more time than required scrolling through unnecessary pieces of information. (Do you know about Alba, the fluorescent rabbit?)
At present, we are facing the problem of excessive-ness in everything. According to some researches, it is concluded that more people will die of obesity than due to hunger or malnutrition. But, what has this got to do with boredom? I'm not losing my track. Before I elobarate, can you please set a 1 minute timer and do nothing in it? Just for one minute. Set the timer and do nothing. Stare at the wall, but do nothing and then get back to this post.
Done? What did it feel like? You must have felt uncomfortable, thoughts like, "What is this? I'm wasting my time, I could have done this or that?" would have crept into your brain. That is the cost that we pay by using social media.
Most of the social media platforms are free, why? Did you ever question that? Why would anyone provide these all entertainment for free? The answer is, because you are product. It's not you using social media, it's social media owners using you, and if I may be bold enough to say, to sell you to advertisers. You can find out more about this in the videos that I have linked below.
Now, the question that arises is, what to do? Should we abandon social media? Breathe out, I won't ask you to renounce social media, but you probably should go on digital detox at least once a week.
Digital detox is when you don't use any of the social media and such, for one day a week, more days if you are comfortable. I tried it and man, life's never being better. There are many videos that explain, through science, why this is helpful and all the pros of doing so, do check them out.
To conclude, being bored allows us to be at peace. Digital detox is the remedy to solving most of your problems in life. It's a bold statement, I know but it's true. Depression? Dehydration? Isolation? Creative block? Anxiety? Insomnia? Digital Detox is the answer. Try it for yourself and thank me in the comment section below.
That will be more than enough for today. See you all soon until then keeping detoxing ;)
