Hello there Smartsouls, how have you been? I'm great as always. In today's post, I will share with you a handful of tips and tricks that will help you read more books, or help you read faster.
So let's begin:
My goal for 2022 was to read 20 books and I read over 50 books. So, this year I challenged myself to read more than 50 books. So far I have read 12 books, and according to GoodReads, I'm behind schedule by 2 books. So, now I got to speed things up a little bit. While researching for tips and tricks I came across a few that are practical and easy to use so here there are. I hope these will help you boost your reads as well.
1. Audiobook.
If you have access to a copy of a book but your reading speed is low, then listen to an audiobook version of the same book at 1.5x while reading the book. It increases your reading speed and helps you enjoy the book. I won't recommend just listening to an audiobook because when I tried listening to audiobooks, I just couldn't focus and often got lost in my imagination.
2. Skimming.
Before you dive right into the book, skim it first. Skimming is when you read the blurb, the chapter titles, and just the highlighted stuff. This allows you to know what you are getting yourself into and helps you understand the content better. The better you understand the faster you can read.
3. Follow the lines with your fingers.
As you read, follow the words with your fingers. This helps you focus better and avoid losing attention halfway through. Another perk of this is it prevents you from spoiling yourself.
4. Read multiple books.
Reading multiple books simultaneously helps to keep things interesting. To avoid confusion choose books from different genres.
5. Read what you want.
Don't read want a certain book tuber, or booktoker is recommending. Read a book that actually makes you curious. You don't have to read books to improve yourself, for knowledge, etc. You have to read books that you enjoy. It can be fiction, non-fiction, self-help, biographies, essays, poems, classics, and so on. Your call.
6. Have a goal.
Having a goal will motivate you and avoid losing track. It creates a road map that you can stick to instead of walking in the dark. It would be even better if you create a reading list.
7. Read shorter books.
If you think you are not the reading type of person, then you are wrong. Everyone can be a reader, as long as they are literate. Try reading shorter books in various genres and know what you enjoy and what you don't. And based on that you can move forward and actually savor your reads.
8. Drop the books that you don't enjoy.
This is the hardest and yet the most important of all. If you are reading a book and you don't enjoy it, drop it. Leave it and pick up the next book. You don't have to feel guilty about that. It's not the time for you to enjoy this book now, maybe later in the future you might like it.
Once I was reading The New Earth, and half through it I didn't want to read it. I was enjoying it, but I didn't feel like going on anymore I dropped it. I picked it again after a few months, and now it's one of my favorites. One thing that helps me drop the book is knowing that if you are not enjoying it, then you are disrespecting the book and its writer.
Above all remember that you don't have to rush your reading. The most important thing is to savor the book. These tips are just to make reading a little interesting by challenging your comfort zones.
That will be all for today, I hope to see you all soon. Do let me know if you tried any one of these tips, or if you have a few tips up your sleeves that will help the other readers and me to read more books, in the comment section below.
