“Worrying is like sitting in a rocking chair. It gives you something to do, but it doesn’t get you anywhere.”
-Emma Bombeck.
Have you ever experienced a time in your life where you just can’t stop thinking about something like an argument you had and what would the most savage reply would have been or some embarrassing movements? If yes, then this post is just for you.
MEANING OF OVERTHINKING:
Dr. Susan Nolen-Hoeksema, a psychologist, defined Rumination as, “a method of coping with a negative mood that involves self-focused attention” or in other words, rumination means overthinking.
In order to evolve as a human, thinking is mandatory. No person can get mature without experience and no experience teaches by itself. It’s the thinking which creates our way to accept the change.
Most of the times we tend to overthink while thinking about what others will think about ourselves, we waste our precious gift of imagination in visualizing things that don’t matter, neither in reality nor in imagination.
We all have experienced overthinking at least once in our lifetime because it’s human nature, but if it’s not controlled then you will face a lot of problems, making things even worse. Here are some side-effects of overthinking.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
Waste of time.
Waste of energy.
Drains our brain, and tires us without doing any physical activity.
It germinates the seeds of fear in us.
Causes depression.
Causes mental sickness and also weakens us mentally.
It ruins us. Ruins the situation, twists it around, and makes us worry, and just makes everything much worse than it actually is.
And according to some studies, it also weakens our heart and other parts of the body.
Now you know the side-effects. Let us now discuss some easy-solutions to avoid overthinking.
SOLUTIONS TO AVOID OVERTHINKING:
Step back and look at how you’re reacting:
The way we react to our thoughts can sometimes keep those thoughts running in a loop in our minds. So, next time whenever you find yourself thinking about something in a loop take notes of how it is affecting you, your mood. Does it make you feel irritated or guilty or angry? Just jot them down.
Having self-awareness is key to changing your mindset.
Try to find a distraction:
End that never-ending loop of thoughts by distracting yourself in the activities that you actually enjoy, like learning a new skill and etc. Something in which you can distract your mind, something productive.
Do something nice for someone:
Try to help someone, try to ease their load. Realizing you have the power to make someone’s day better can keep us distracted as well as gives us something productive to focus on, instead of running a never-ending loop of thoughts.
Take action:
Usually, we miss some great opportunities just by overthinking about them and never actually taking an action. So stop thinking and take action.
Take it or leave it:
Keep things SIMPLE and do your best and leave the rest. That is all that matters at the end of the day, that you did your best.
CONCLUSION:
Overthinking is like an addiction, the more you do it, the more you get addicted to it, and the more you try to get rid of it, the more impossible it gets.
Just keep things simple and never think about what others will think. To be honest, no one really cares, they have their own chaos to think about their own problems that are to be solved. So stop thinking and start doing.
CHERRY ON THE CAKE:
Here are some lines that have
helped me to get rid of overthinking
If the universe didn’t
need you,
you wouldn’t be here.
Acceptance of yourself is far
more important than
acceptance
from others.
You’re busy doubting yourself
while so many people are
intimidated by your potential.
That will be all for today,
meet y’all soon.
Until then keep trying and sparkling.
